Cahier-Style Sketchbook

Create a custom cahier sketchbook journal using materials available in most art classrooms and office copier rooms. Creating and hand-binding your own sketchbook is a very affordable classroom activity. It is an engaging method for encouraging your students to keep a sketchbook. We will focus on learning two methods of binding in the Master Class; the saddle-stitch and staple binding methods as used to bind small cahier sketchbooks. This style of binding is based on the Moleskine and the Field Notes brands of sketchbook or notebook journals.

(Cahier is pronounced /ˈyā/ or ki-yay.)

You may bring any materials you like. The following materials WILL be provided: small awl, self healing cutting board, scissors, bone folder pr scoring tool, blunt tip embroidery needle, x-acto knife, pencil, old phone book, stick card for cover, embroidery thread, bond paper or other found papers for interior pages (from old ledgers or grade books), wax, corner paper punch, metal cork-backed ruler.

Eli Marco Hall
Screen Printing Basics

This class will focus on the basics of screen printing. In an abridged process, image prep, screen burning, printing, and cleanup will be covered. Multiple methods of image creation will be addressed to accommodate varied skill levels.

Materials will be provided for a poster print. You may bring other 2-D materials you might like to print on that won't damage screens (no rough cut wood). Restrictions are a 20 x 24 workspace and a maximum 10 x 14 printable area. To expedite the image production process, you can bring art work you want to reproduce in one color.

Bio: After receiving an associate degree from Ozark Technical College, Eli Marco Hall received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Missouri State University in 1995, where the design staff consisted of a “crazy Russian illustrator, a typographer from Poland, a poster designer from Poland and a hard-nosed Czechoslovakian.” This unique undergraduate experience set the stage for an amazing episode of his life. Hall went on to earn a Master of Arts from Lindenwood University, and recently received his second master’s degree in graphic design at Colorado State University because of his belief in an absolute need for quality design.
