2016 CAEA Western 
Summer Art Conference

Focus on the artist inside you! Take time, come together, and expand your creative endeavors! Learn from leading artists from the state of Colorado.

We will be featuring four Master Classes.
Friday, July 15th will feature Alternate Wheel Thrown Forms and the Creation of Detailed Surfaces with instructor KyoungHwa Oh, and Accordion Fold and Japanese Stab Binding methods with Suzie Garner. Saturday, July 16th will feature Observational Drawing of Botanicals with instructor Lily Cain and Screen Printing; The Art of the Stencil with with Eli Hall.

Lunch will be provided. Registrants will take all four classes. Bring listed materials/tools. No additional materials fees to be paid to the artists. See class descriptions for additional information.

KyoungHwa Oh                                        Alternate Wheel Thrown Form and Creation of the Detailed Surface

We will use wheel (or hand build) to make a form and alter it by adding to it, cutting it, and tapping it. Once a new form is created, we will add slip and carve for surface decoration.

Materials/Tools Needed 

Ceramics tool kit (Kemper pottery tool kit)

Bring leather-hard piece(s) if you can…

At least 5lb Clay (B-Mix, White stoneware clay) – Colorado Mesa University Bookstore has the clay (25 lb – around $13.99).

KyoungHwa Oh

KyoungHwa Oh creates objects that reflect traditional Korean culture and western contemporary style. Eastern and western cultures are symbolically expressed through this language. Like Yin and Yang, Her work encompasses the influence between traditional Asian values and modern Western society.  She is currently teaching at Colorado Mesa University and was named in Ceramics Monthly Magazine as one of the top emerging artists of 2012.

Suzie Garner                                            Accordion Fold & Japanese Stab Binding Methods with

Create custom sketchbooks using two different binding methods; the Accordion Fold and Japanese Stab Binding. You and your students can complete these sketchbooks using materials found in most office copier rooms. The act of creating your own sketchbook is an engaging method for encouraging your students to draw and think about a sketchbook as art object.

Materials/Tools Needed 

(These will be provided - bring your own if you have them.)

- small awl

- scissors

- bone folder or scoring tool

- blunt tip embroidery needle

- x-acto knife

- pencil

- wax

- metal cork-backed ruler

Suzie Garner Biography

Professor of Art and a practicing studio artist, she is an oil painter and avid sketchbook artist. In addition to teaching drawing, sketchbook and graphic design courses she has given field sketching workshops/talks for the Colorado National Monument, Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park in Utah and for the Yellowstone Association Institute in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Her personal artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally in Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Kansas, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Texas, Wyoming, all over Colorado and in the United Kingdom. Recently, she has spent extensive time sketching in Yellowstone National Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. You can see her artwork atwww.sketchingspirit.com or getoutsideanddraw.tumblr.com

Lily Cain
Observational Drawing: Botanicals 
A studio workshop with emphasis on visual comprehension while evolving essential drawing practices. We will utilize botanicals to gauge an understanding of detail, value, line, perspective, and proportion. Studies will be done mainly in graphite and pen/ink to develop confidence and craftsmanship of materials. Students will be exposed to a wide range of drawing strategies and media in an effort to expand their critical analysis of the drawn image.

Lily Cain Biography

A native Californian, Cain received her BFA from Sonoma State University and her MFA from the Royal College of Art in London. She has shown her work at galleries in England and the U.S., most recently at the Sandra Lee Gallery in San Francisco. She is currently the Artist-in-Residence at Colorado Mesa University, where she teaches printmaking and fundamental classes.

Eli Hall                                                          Screen Printing: The Art of the Stencil 

The class will cover the basics of screen printing from artwork prep to clean up. All participants will get to pull there own unique series of prints using water based inks.

Materials/Tools Needed

Any one color artwork, no larger than 11x17, would help out. But feel free to create the day of (time will be limited). We will provide paper for prints but if you want to print on other 2d surfaces, bring them and we’ll give it a go:)

Eli Hall Biography

After receiving an associate degree from Ozark Technical College, Eli Marco Hall received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Missouri State University in 1995, where the design staff consisted of a "crazy Russian illustrator, a typographer from Poland, a poster designer from Poland and a hard-nosed Czechoslovakian." This unique undergraduate experience set the stage for an amazing episode of his life. Hall went on to earn a Master of Arts from Lindenwood University, and recently received his second master's degree in graphic design at Colorado State University because of his belief in an absolute need for quality design.
